The 49th Annual Dinner
The 49th Annual Dinner of the Society took place in November 2009 in the City’s Brangwyn Hall. Despite the economic conditions, President Jeremy Clayton welcomed over 400 people attending the evening. As always, it is an opportunity to thank our clients and the City for their support.
The guest speaker was Carwyn Jones AM then Counsel General at the Welsh Assembly Government who, the following month, succeeded as First Minister. The President recalled Carwyn’s early professional life at the Bar in Swansea – at Pendragon Chambers. Carwyn was also a rugby referee for many years and the Law society team benefited from some of his rulings. Carwyn spoke about his time in the Swansea area before the lure of politics took over his life. His keynote speech was delivered before the meal, which then allowed everyone to relax in the ambiance of the evening. Dr Alan Sykes provided musical accompaniment on the superb Brangwyn Organ.
President Jeremy then took to his feet and regaled the audience with a vivid history of the characters of the Swansea legal profession in his connections with rugby, cricket and the newly formed Law Society walking club. Members are reminded that the cricket team always needs new blood and the fixture list is on the website. Immediate Past President Wynford Arthur leads the walking club and the events are normally posted here on our website.
Jeremy emphasised the importance of the younger members of the Society supporting the Junior Lawyers Division.

Each table was photographed and there are some shots from the bar and post-dinner intercourse.
The evening raised money for four local charities – raising over £2,000 including the matched funding kindly donated by Barclays Bank plc.
